DataFest FAQ

  • Who is eligible to compete?
    All undergraduate students from the University of Missouri, or other local undergraduates from colleges or universities with agreements with the Department of Statistics at Mizzou are encouraged to participate. All members of the team must be undergraduates.
  • What about graduate students?
    We would love to have graduate students get involved as VIP Consultants during the event. 
  • How large are the teams?
    Teams can be made up of 2-5 students.
  • Do I have to compete in a team?
    Yes, but let us know if we can help you find a team.
  • What do I need to compete?
    Enthusiasm for data! Make sure your own desktop or laptop computer is ready with your favorite tools for data analysis (there is no limitation on which software you use).
  • Do we have to stay the entire time during the event?
    No. You may come and go as you please.
  • How will my team get the data?
    The data will be distributed via University of Missouri Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). A curtesy account for non-Mizzou participant will be given. The data set may be as large as 2 GB, so make sure you have sufficient memory.
  • What can I win?
    ASA student memberships, gift cards, fame, glory, or some combination thereof…
  • Which categories are we competing?
    Prizes are awarded in three categories: Best in Show, Best Visualization, and Best Use of External Data
